       One of the most prestigious natural language processing scientists in China, professor and PhD supervisor at College of Computer Science and Engineering, Northeastern University, visiting scholar at City University of Hong Kong and ISI of University of Southern California.

       He has been working on machine translation and linguistic analysis since 1992. He's listed into the New Century Excellent Researcher Award Program by Ministry of Education of China, One-hundred Talents program in Liaoning Province and One-hundred Talent Engineering Innovation Team in Liaoning Province. He published more than 40 papers on the top journals and conferences such as Artificial Intelligence, Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, IEEE, ACM Transactions and ACL, EMNLP, COLING as the first author/corresponding author. He co-edited the monograph Natural Language Understanding-A research on How Machine Can Understand Human Language. He has also presided more than ten research subjects on linguistic analysis and Machine Translation under Natural Science Foundation of China and National 863 Program. He has won 1 first prize and 1 third prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Outstanding software Award in Liaoning province, 5 American patents, 2 Chinese patents and 2 domestic software copyrights.

       He supervises the development NiuTrans Opensource, an open-source statistical machine translation(SMT) system, which has been freely shared with research centers from over 1,000 colleges, universities and corporations in more than 60 countries. At present, NiuTrans, together with Moses, is among the most influencial MT builders and can support all the five SMT models. The MT system based on NiuTrans Opensource has won the first/second awards in the Machine Translation Evaluation Tasks(like NTCIR-9/CWMT2009/CWMT2011) for many times. In addition, he also supervised the development of NiuParser, a tool for Chinese syntactic and semantic analysis, which has been freely shared with more than 500 research institutions.

       He also serves a dozen academic organizations, e.g., a director for Chinese Information Processing Society of China, a member of Information Retrieval and Content Security Committee under Chinese Information Processing Society, Natural Language Understanding Committee under Chinese Association Artificial Intelligence,Machine Translation Committee under Chinese Information Processing Society, and Computing Linguistics Committee Chinese Information Processing Society, an editor of Journal of Chinese Information Processing and the associate editor of International Journal of Advanced Intelligence,.

Dr. Tong Xiao, Technical leader of NiuTrans Team:

       The associate professor of College of Computer Science and Engineering, Northeastern University. A young prominent scientist of machine translation, the nominee of the first China Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award selected by Chinese Information Processing Society, the visiting scholar in Fujitsu R&D Center and Microsoft Research Asia, the post-doc at Cambridge University.

      He led NiuTrans team to develop SMT engines for international MT competitions, winning the first/second prize for 3 times in CWMT2009/CWMT2011, the top MT competition in China and NICIR2011, an international patent MT competition held in Japan.

       He works on the research of neural MT, syntax-based SMT, syntax-based language models and the training of translation models. He has published over a dozen papers in journals like AI, JAIR, TALIP and conferences like ACL, EMNLP, COLING. He also serves as the associate director of Youth Working Committee and a member of Information Retrieval and Content Security Committee under Chinese Information Processing Society.

NiuTrans team has undertaken 30 national research projects, 13 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 5 National “863” projects, 4 National key Technologies Research and Development projects, 4 PH.D projects funded by Ministry of education of China, 1 National “973” project ( Language Analysis and Machine Translation), 1 National “242” information security project, 1 Key Project of Chinese Ministry of Education, 1 project for New Century Excellent Talents(NCET) in University funded by Ministry of Education of China.

R&D Achievements

NiuTrans Team has strong passion for turning the MT R&D achievements into application. They built MT systems, participated in MT competitions and won 3 first/second awards at home and abroad.
